house rules…

20 Oct

…the transition in our house from one to two children has been pretty smooth, but it hasn’t been entirely butterflies and rainbows. we had a tough last week with a spike in toddler jealousy and a new found skill for arguing (well, really just saying the opposite of whatever we say…oh, i see my younger self so clearly in this. sorry mom and dad…). it felt like every sentence out of my mouth started with ‘no, don’t…’ and everyone was getting a little on edge. i was talking with a friend when she mentioned about the rules they had made and hung on their fridge, and i remembered that even for kids who can’t read it’s a good thing for them to have a physical reference for things like that – and e responds really well to the rules at school, so i guessed this would be a good thing. we came up with our house rules together – (can you tell which one would be at the top of my list??) and since then it has really been much less stressful around here. well, except for yesterday when e said, ‘there are no choices, only rules’   (ack ack!)

the funny thing for me is that i never thought i would be a ‘rules’ sort of parent…but here we are and never say never and all that. it’s working and our house is calmer and that’s what matters to me right now…

have a lovely day all**

Ah yes, the “no don’t” days – I hear ya. Three and a half months out – it does seem to be better. Hang in there and get in touch soon! T

we didn’t think we’d be the rules parents either. it’s survival, whatever works.
