oh, and we ate pretzels…

(i realized as i posted this picture, that maybe these pretzels don’t look that appetizing. you know, they kind of look a little like…..anyway..)

…every once in a while i remember about pretzels. and i think of years ago and the pretzel stands in germany and eating them in some park with a jar of mustard we carried around with us for just such a purpose, and i get all drooly for pretzels. yesterday i had this kind of moment. so i looked up a recipe in one of my very old, yet awesome, bread books. i’ve made pretzels before with varying degrees of success…these are my favorites so far – and a really easy, really basic dough recipe. i used plain old white flour, because i wanted them to be…delicious. and the egg glaze, well, i think it just might be key…

soft pretzels.

1 pkg active dry yeast (i used about 2 and 1/4 tsp), 1 and 1/2 C warm water, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp sugar, 3 and 1/2 – 4 C flour

*dissolve yeast in warm water in mixing bowl, add salt, sugar, and 2 cups of flour. mix until smooth. add remaining flour to form dough. let rise in greased bowl 45-60 minutes. roll sections into ropes and form into a pretzel shape. brush with a beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt. bake at 425 for 17 minutes.

yum. pretzels. pretzels and mustard. drooly…
