first day…

27 Oct

…a late october surprise left me feeling, well, kind of totally unprepared for winter. we got out our jackets and toques and boots and walked up and down the street. we felled the giant sunflowers that spent the summer in front of our house – they were getting so heavy with snow that they almost fell over on their own anyway. we enjoyed a ‘first day of snow’ party with friends. i baked more than usual and remembered that baking is the main way i get through winter. and soup. speaking of which, here is my favorite new recipe (a mish mash of others and kind of made up) for black bean soup…

*saute one diced onion, celery, and red pepper with butter

*add two cans of black beans (drained) and about 2 cups of soup stock

*add 3 tbsp cumin, 1 tbsp curry powder, and chili flakes to taste – simmer 10 minutes

*add one can of diced tomatoes and more soup stock if necessary

*simmer until you’re too hungry to wait

*yum.

happy first day of snow to you!

Good to see that Boolah still loves the outdoors! Ah yes…winter has come. We had to search for our winter stuff today and gave in to wearing mitts today. Nice baby carrier Ella.
