cleaning and me…

18 Oct

…i love cleaning. if i had a free day – all to myself with nothing else to do – i would probably spend the better part of that day cleaning. i know, it’s sickening, right? and maybe i think so much about cleaning and tidying and organizing because i spend most of everyday in my home – and so, all the more opportunity to wash the floors and do laundry. anyway….whenever i can i like to use products that are ‘eco-friendly’ (but even using those words is a little off putting, since i know that this phrase gets tossed around just to sell things), but even more than that, i like to make my own cleaning products so i know exactly what is in them, and also so i can control what they smell like. once you have the main ingredients – the rest is so easy, and usually way cheaper than buying ready made products. for an all purpose spray, i just have a spray  bottle i refill – i usually use lavender, tea tree, rosemary, or peppermint essential oils. i really love this post on one of my favorite blogs, here,  for natural cleaning recipes.

also, a while back i read this post about making laundry soap – something i’ve wanted to do for a long time. though, when i went to follow the recipe i dicovered that buying dr. bronner’s soap bars here is really cost prohibitive. i decided instead to use the recipe that i found on my box of soap flakes:

…i get the washing soda and borax at the grocery store, and the soap flakes at the natural food store. i’ve been keeping track (because i’m crazy like that) of how far it goes to see whether it’s worth it or not to make it myself. the soap flakes ran out much quicker than the other two ingredients (i have at least half of each of those boxes left), but my best calculation is that my ingredients for about 100 loads (i use a 1/4 cup measuring scoop – and i never find that is too little) was about $20. i do about 2 loads a day (and i only have one child…gack!) so it’s lasted me a couple of months. i would love to find a cheaper source of soap flakes, since that was the bulk of the cost. i think i will keep making it though, i’m happy with the way it works and i love that there is no fragrance.

give it a try if you like…and happy cleaning!
