the projects keep on…

9 Jul

…with a freshly organized sewing room (and this really really helps, since this is part of a walk-through room, in the middle of our house), it seems that projects are just humming along. this first one is another bag – for ella this time. also on that rainy day, i suggested to ella that we make a backpack for her – and in my mind i was kind of thinking one of those simple bags where the straps are also the drawstring…you know? but oh no, as soon as i started cutting fabric i knew i was going to get carried away (though i’m sure ella kind of wished i’d gone with the first idea, and had her bag in half an hour instead of hours – okay, a day – later…). i decided i wanted it to look like a real backpack, and be sturdy enough to hold some goods. here’s how it turned out…

…the main fabric is from ikea – a lovely heavy cotton perfect for this – and the dots are from my stash. the bag opens and closes with a zipper (but oh, rookie mistake here…i sewed in the zipper before i realized it was without a bottom stop, as in, it was for something like a jacket. oops. i improvised a felt stopper instead of ripping it out).  and like i said, things went a little overboard…i thought – this bag needs piping! this bag needs a pocket! this bag needs zipper pulls! …and so on…

…and when i got ella to try it on, she exlpained in a very two year old kind of way that it was definitely missing a buckle across the chest. ‘buckle mama, BUCKLE!’ and so that was the last addition…

…ella has no real ‘need’ for this bag right now (besides it being a new home for her dolls), but wouldn’t it be lovely if she were to carry around her own snacks someday? hmmm, someday. until then, i’ll just really wish that it was in an adult size…

and another project that got finished today was this sewing room chair makeover. i guess all this stashed away ikea fabric had to get used eventually. it was a pretty quick fix, and looks way better than the awful brown i covered up. just a staple gun and some handstitching here and there on the back to keep it in place…

…hooray for making, and hooray for lovely things!…

have a wonderful friday everyone!
